Have you ever forget about something?

We tend to forget about something we read, something we listened or something we watched.

I have forgotten about something that I learned. It happened when I did it once. One-time learning is not enough for me. I should do it more to strengthen my memory.

Anyway, I realized that memorize something is not only about remembering word by word. Perhaps, we used to learn any material in a class by memorizing it. Then, we couldn’t remember all of the contents.

What’s wrong?

Not all people can memorize something precisely. Some people can remember something based on their language. I mean, they can remember something if they can recall it by using their language. It doesn’t matter if the word is not the same as long as the explanation is correct.

I get insight from Jordan Peterson about how to remember something without remembering it.

There are three steps of remembering something by Jordan Peterson.

Give full attention

When you read, listen or watch something, you have to give full attention to it. You better not do something other than focus on the topic in front of you. Taking notes can help you memorize the material. But, Peterson suggests that you can take notes after the learning process.

Think about your opinion

It’s good to think about the material. You can open up your argument or opinion about it. So, you will not only remember it, but you can also make a logical understanding of it. It’s like cooking the material inside your head until it’s ready to serve. This material is not raw anymore.

Write Your Understanding

After you understand the material logically, you can start to write it by using your language. This note-taking effort will strengthen your understanding. You can write whatever you have learned on a piece of paper. Then, you can read it many times until you remember it. It’s easier to remember our language than others.

Let’s apply the technique to a specific topic. Imagine you want to remember about economic theory. You have to give full attention while you read or learn it. Think about your opinion about that economic theory. Answer the question inside your head. Perhaps, you can simplify it. After that, write your understanding of economic theory. Read your writing repeatedly.

Those are three steps that you can learn to master your memory intelligence. It doesn’t matter if you have another technique. Do what you think is fit for you.

The thing is that you can effectively memorize what you understand, not what you know. Repetition is also crucial to strengthen your memory.

What do you want to memorize then?
