I used to be a deadline worker from high school to college. I didn’t prepare for my task long before the due date. That’s why it made me overwhelmed after finishing it.

I wanted to stop the habit, but I still did it. Then, I tried to stop it little by little. I tried to finish the task on time.

I thought it was not easy. But it was worth doing.

I was curious why I could not finish the task on time. I tried to find out the root cause of it. And I realized that it was part of procrastination. I imagined that I could wait for a proper time. But I hadn’t found it unless I started.

It was enough for me.

Today, I am not a professional deadline worker anymore. I learn from my experience. You know that finishing a task on time helps me save time and maintain my mental health.

There are two simple tips I use to stop from becoming a deadline worker. It is simple but effective for me. Let me share it with you.

  1. Make a list of your task. Jot down what you have to do. Chunk it down into smaller pieces, a sub-task. A big task will be easy if we can make it small, a small bite.
  2. Finish your simple sub-task first. You can work on your simple sub-task long before the due date, one by one. So your sub-task decreases day by day.

For example:
You have the task of making an essay. Chunk it into smaller pieces like brainstorming ideas, finding supporting data, making an outline, writing the main point in every paragraph, etc. You can start your task by doing the simplest sub-task, like brainstorming ideas until you find what you want. And so on.

It’s not easy to stop from becoming a deadline worker. But now you don’t need to worry. You can minimize the effect of feeling overwhelmed by doing two tips that I told you before. Finish your task little by little, bite by bite.
