Choose Your Essential Things
Recently, I thought about the things I want to buy, the things I want to get, or the things I want to have. As if what I want is always essential.
Then,
After thinking about it many times, it turns out that what I want is not always as important. It feels like piling up desires. There are only a few that matter.
And,
Important to me, not necessarily important to you. It means we should know what are the essential things in our life.
Awareness of these essential things led me to the principle: Less is more.
In my opinion, less is more has many connotations. Less is more does not mean impoverishing yourself because having a few things is not necessarily poor.
Having a few things or a few wishes can make you happy instead.
How come?
Yes.
By having a few things, we can have a more peaceful mind. We don’t need to think about unimportant things anymore. Take a look around you. Are those all things essential to your life?
Yap.
A simple example is clothes. We always choose the ones that are still good or comfortable to wear. That is, we don’t wear all the clothes often. At least just a few, right?
So, what are essentials exactly?
Let us examine this essential meaning again. Essential means important. Important means priority. Priority means what must come first. It should be in line with the values we hold.
For example, one of my values is about loving my family. It is the most valuable treasure to me. It means that the essential thing that I must prioritize is my family first, then everything else.
Back again to the values that you hold. Those values are essential things in your life. It could be values about yourself, your family, or other people.
Okay.
Now, write down what values you hold. Then write down the essential things related to that value. After that, be prepared to apply the less is more principle. Have a little, but the important thing, the essentials.
What are the essential things in your life? Essential experiences? Essential skills? Essential habits? Essential tasks?
