2 Things I Want to Stop This Year
We are in 2022 right now. A new year has always been a great moment for us. Some of us celebrate it with euphoria and enthusiasm. Some others plan their new resolution. So do I.
However, there are things that I always want to stop this year because it is holding me back from achieving my resolution.
I tried to evaluate last year’s resolution. I was grateful cause I could achieve it. But, I got difficulty during the process because of things I talked about before. So, I decided to stop it.
What are the things?
There are two bad habits. Those are comparing myself with others and wasting time. I want to stop them in this new year so that I can be flowing in the process of achieving my resolution.
Let me share with you how I stopped it.
Comparing with others
Have you ever compared yourself with others?
It is easy to compare with others in the digital age, where we can see many people’s lives from our hands. The social media phenomenon has changed our perspective about life, where we focus on the image of ourselves and others. We become the super care people today.
What do you feel when seeing your friend traveling, eating delicious food, or even buying a new fancy car?
Every person may act differently toward social media posts, but some of us will compare them with our life.
Then, I decided to do a social media detox. I mean, I stopped scrolling on it so much. I minimized my time on social media for stalking.
I prefer finding educational or inspiring content instead. That is why I turn my posts on social media into educational content so that people can learn from them.
Wasting time
Have you ever wasted your time?
Even though I have set a productive time in a day, I still wasted my time because there was an unpredictable moment. For example, I planned to create content at 9 am, but I got confused about the idea. So, I stopped writing and then watching entertainment stuff excessively. It is wasting time.
To solve this problem, I tried dopamine detox for a while. I minimized the need for entertainment or short-term pleasure. Watching tv, searching for something good, and scrolling on social media will produce dopamine, but it held me back from doing the task. In other words, I became lazy.
I know that watching entertainment is pleasurable, but the effect does not last long. We will get back the stress and confusion again.
I tried harder to overcome this habit. But the one thing that I did to support dopamine detox was set a sense of urgency or Parkinson’s law towards my task. I made the task urgent, even though it was not.
I wrote about Parkinson’s law in another article, anyway.
And then, as an alternative, if we cannot change a bad habit, we can switch it to a good one. For example, we can switch from watching entertainment videos to educational videos, and so on.
I feel better after I stop my bad habit. It helps me a lot in facing the new year. I realize that every year should be better than before. So, eliminating some bad habits is the right way to improve ourselves and our life. Don’t let it hold you back from doing the right task.
What things or habits do you want to stop then?
